Blogging from the iphone
July 23rd, 2008

I’m still yet to get my greasy little paws on the 3g iPhone, but I’m enjoying the most recent software up date to my old iPhone that brings with it the addition of applications, more specifically a nice little wordpress app. Here’s to the first of what will hopefully be many mobile blog posts!

Only the market gets the market
June 25th, 2008

I’ve always worked for youth focused brands and agencies, and one the mantras of an old agency was, “only the market gets the market.” It’s fairly common sense really, and in essence what planning is all about, but it was supposed to get across to (prospective) clients that as in touch as you think you are with the youth of today, you probably aren’t. Just because you did something, felt something, or used something when you were in the target demographic doesn’t mean that it’s the same case now. Things change. And in todays world that rate of change is getting quicker and quicker.

A great example of this is a comment in a recent post from Fred Wilson, in which he says:

“The other day I saw my oldest daughter get an invite to a party on Facebook, she accepted it, and then went to look at her accepted invite page. It was her social calendar, every party she plans to attend in the next two months is there. She noticed she had another event that night and then switched her acceptance to tentative. She uses Facebook the way I use Outlook.”

It’s a comment that really resonated with me and highlighted the way in which today’s young digital natives use the service. I’ve often questioned the walled garden approach that Facebook take, but if all of the information you need is within that garden then where’s the problem?

10 Things…
June 25th, 2008

Google has found to be true.

  1. Focus on the user and all else will follow.
  2. It’s best to do one thing really, really well.
  3. Fast is better than slow.
  4. Democracy on the web works.
  5. You don’t need to be at your desk to need an answer.
  6. You can make money without doing evil.
  7. There’s always more information out there.
  8. The need for information crosses all borders.
  9. You can be serious without a suit.
  10. Great just isn’t good enough.

How YouTube…

How YouTube should look

Should look. I have a bit of a thing for design and architecture, and this is a great example of getting it right.

Sound Index
June 25th, 2008

The BBC have created a new music listing that regularly monitors artists’ online buzz (mentions, searches, downloads, plays etc…) from a host of prominent sites and social networks (last.fm, MySpace, Bebo, itunes, Google and YouTube) to create a chart of the top 1000. Ok, so it’s not perfect, there are plenty of other music sources that it doesn’t include, but surely given the ubiquitous availability of music on the web, and the do-it-yourself attitude of most up and coming bands and artists, this has to be a step in the right direction?

Some men see things as they are, and ask why. I dream things that never were, and ask why not.

Internet Trend Report

Morgan Stanley’s latest ‘Internet Trend Report’ makes for interesting reading, and focuses nearly solely upon the growth and importance of social applications and their growing dominance of the internet.

Trendpedia

Trendpedia

Interesting new site trendpedia allows you to compare the online buzz around different search terms. For instance the image above shows the comparative blog coverage of the three main mayoral candidates. I’ve not looked into the specifics of how the data is collected, but an interesting tool none the less.
